Postdoctoral Research Fellow, U. Exeter

Duration: 3 years

This post, which is funded by the Leverhulme Trust, is available from 1 November for a period of three years to support the work of Professor Geoff Nash.

The University of Exeter is a Russell Group university that combines world-class research with very high levels of student satisfaction. Exeter has over 21,000 students from more than 130 different countries and is in the top 1% of universities in the world with 98% of its research rated as being of international quality. Our research focuses on some of the most fundamental issues facing humankind today.

The aim of this exciting new project is to explore a new method of aquatic propulsion, exploiting surface acoustic waves, that mimics the way many microorganisms move, or swim, through their environment. This will help further the understanding of the fundamental science of microorganism swimming, shedding new light on how biological processes, such as bacterial infection, are governed by this movement. Ultimately this improved understanding could also lead to the development of artificial swimming devices.

The post will include a mixture of mathematical and finite element modelling, device fabrication and experimentation. The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.

Winton Advanced Research Fellowship, University of Cambridge

Duration: 5 years

The scheme supports outstanding, ambitious scientists with the potential to become independent research leaders in their field.  It provides substantial support to allow Fellows to develop new research programmes that expand the range of research activities within the Department of Physics.  Projects that cross traditional boundaries between physics and other sciences and engineering disciplines are particularly favoured.

Fellowships will be for 5 years' duration and will provide appropriate support for equipment, graduate students, travel and operating expenses.  Application details can be found on the Winton website - http://www.winton.phy.cam.ac.uk/jobs/fellowships-2017

Further information can be obtained by contacting the Winton Programme manager Dr Nalin Patel (nlp28@cam.ac.uk)
